Today, glasses are one of the key elements of style. There is a variety of shapes and materials – metallic, acetate, square, P3, etc. It has become quite common to choose glasses according to the time, place and event. Optical boutiques have sprung up everywhere, and people choose glasses with the same approach as they choose clothes or shoes. However, what we take for granted today was completely different before the early 1970s. Glasses were perceived only as a means of correcting vision, and their image was far from the world of fashion. Salespeople were opticians in white coats, and style was not a concern.

So when did glasses become a part of fashion?

In 1972, together with Kensuke Ishizu of VAN Jacket Inc. under the slogan “glasses as a fashion accessory”, EYEVAN was founded as Japan’s first fashion optics brand. The design inspired by the style and tranquility of Japanese culture, as well as the precision of manufacturing, became its foundation. Focusing on the pleasure of wearing glasses as an element of style, in 1985 the brand went beyond Japan to the world, under the watchful aesthetic eye of an optical store in Los Angeles (Oliver Peoples).

The city of Sabae, Fukui Prefecture, is known around the world as the “city of glasses.” The label “Made in Sabae” is an absolute guarantee of quality. Like Neapolitan shirts, shoes from Northampton, or whiskey from the Isle of Islay, this place is inextricably linked to the product it creates. History, climate, traditions, craftsmanship, customs, innovation, pride. The power of people, labor and time – everything is gathered here in a unique concentration. This city gives the world something truly special. This is what it means to be recognized as a place of origin.

From the very beginning to the present day, all EYEVAN eyewear is made right here in Sabae, a city that stretches in a narrow strip from north to south and is surrounded by mountains. They are a living proof of the high quality of products born in Sabae. This is the origin of the EYEVAN brand.
